Giant Dog Breeds

Giant breeds typically weigh 90+ pounds. Examples include Great Danes (110-175 lbs), Irish Wolfhounds (105-120 lbs), Saint Bernards (120-180 lbs), Mastiffs (120-230 lbs), and Newfoundlands (100-150 lbs). These are the true giants of the dog world.

Many giants are excellent family dogs—Newfoundlands are famous "nanny dogs," Great Danes are gentle and patient, and Saint Bernards are calm and tolerant. Their laid-back temperaments often make them better with children than smaller, more excitable breeds.

Surprisingly, many giants are calm indoors and do not need huge homes. Great Danes and Mastiffs are often called "apartment dogs" due to their low energy. They do need room to turn around comfortably and space for a large dog bed.

Giant dogs age approximately 7 times faster than humans (vs 4-5x for small breeds). Their rapid growth causes cellular stress, and their hearts and joints work harder to support their size. Selective breeding for size has prioritized appearance over longevity.

Bloat (GDV) is a life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. Giant breeds are highly susceptible. Signs include restlessness, distended abdomen, and unproductive retching. It requires emergency surgery within hours. Preventive gastropexy is often recommended.
