Dogs That Get Along With Cats

While individual dogs vary, breeds with high prey drive (Jack Russells, Greyhounds, Huskies) often struggle regardless of training. Choose breeds with naturally low prey drive for the best success.

Keep them separated initially, swap bedding to share scents, use baby gates for controlled visual introduction, reward calm behavior, and never leave them unsupervised until you are certain they are safe together. This process takes weeks, not days.

Puppies are easier to socialize with cats but require supervision during the teething phase. Adult dogs from rescues may already be cat-tested. Avoid adult dogs with unknown cat history.

Good signs: relaxed body language, looking away when cat moves, ability to be recalled from the cat. Bad signs: fixated staring, stiff body, lunging, ignoring commands when cat is present.

Getting a cat first is often easier. Kittens raised with dogs adapt well. Adult cats in dog-free homes may struggle when a dog is introduced. Consider your future pet plans when choosing your first pet.
