Irish Water Spaniel

Unlike the "everyone is a friend" Golden Retriever, the IWS is naturally aloof and watchful. Without extensive early socialization, this reserve can escalate into fear-based aggression or sharp territoriality. They are known to be discerning and will not automatically welcome guests into your home.

This is a "Velcro" breed in the truest sense. They bond intensely with their family and often panic when left alone. Destructive behaviors (chewing through drywall, destroying crates) and excessive vocalization are common failure modes for owners who work long hours away from home.

As a bird dog with a "soft mouth" for retrieval, they still possess a significant prey drive. They are generally unsafe around small non-canine pets (cats, rabbits, hamsters) unless raised with them under strict supervision, and even then, the instinct to chase is powerful.
