氷が張った危険な水中での回収作業において独自の判断を行うように育てられたチェシーは、命令に盲目的に従いません。一貫性や自信のないハンドラーには反抗します。「従順な犬」ではなく「交渉人」と表現されることが多い犬種です。
チェシー、特にオスは、社会的成熟（18〜24か月）に達すると同性の犬への不寛容を示すことが珍しくありません。これにより、複数の犬を飼う家庭での管理が難しくなることがあります。
