Large dogs cost $1,500-3,000+ annually for food, vet care, and supplies—roughly 50-100% more than small breeds. Add boarding costs ($50-75/day vs $30-40), larger crates, bigger beds, and more expensive medications. Budget $150-250/month minimum.

Many large breeds (Labs, Goldens, Newfoundlands) are famously gentle with children. Their size makes them sturdy for play. However, puppies can accidentally knock over toddlers, and proper training is essential. Supervision is always recommended.

Some can, with commitment. Greyhounds and Mastiffs are surprisingly apartment-friendly due to calm temperaments. High-energy breeds (Labs, German Shepherds) struggle without extensive daily exercise. Elevators and stairs also become considerations.

Labrador Retrievers are often cited as the easiest—friendly, trainable, and adaptable. Golden Retrievers and Newfoundlands are also forgiving for first-time large dog owners. Avoid guardian breeds (Rottweilers, Dobermans) as first dogs.

Large dogs age faster at a cellular level, likely due to rapid growth rates and higher metabolic demands. A 7-year-old Great Dane is geriatric while a 7-year-old Chihuahua is middle-aged. Giant breeds like Danes may only live 6-8 years.
