This is the primary behavioral failure mode for the breed. Cockapoos are "Velcro dogs" in the truest sense. They do not just *prefer* company; many *require* it to function. Left alone, they are prone to panic disorders manifesting as non-stop vocalization, destruction of entry points (scratching doors/carpets), and self-mutilation. They are generally unsuitable for homes where all adults work full-time away from the house without doggy daycare provision.

While generally friendly, the Cocker Spaniel lineage can introduce a genetic predisposition to resource guarding (possessiveness over food, toys, or locations). This trait, sometimes linked to "Rage Syndrome" in solid-colored Cockers historically, can appear in Cockapoos, requiring early management protocols.

The combination of the Poodle's alertness and the Spaniel's busy nature can create a dog that struggles to settle. They can be hyper-reactive to stimuli (doorbells, passersby), leading to nuisance barking that is difficult to extinguish.

Unlike Golden Retrievers that settle around age 2-3, Flat-Coats retain high-octane, boisterous puppy energy well into their senior years (7+). Exuberant jumping and face-licking can be dangerous for small children or frail elderly owners.

This is a true 'velcro' breed with very low tolerance for isolation. Leaving a Flat-Coat alone for 8+ hours often results in severe destruction (chewing drywall, digging carpets) and distress vocalization.

Approximately 54% of Flat-Coated Retrievers die from cancer, with Histiocytic Sarcoma affecting up to 20% of the breed. Average diagnosis age is tragically young (8-9 years).

As a retriever, their solution to excitement is to grab something with their mouth. If a toy isn't available, they will grab your arm, sleeve, or pant leg. This 'soft mouth' hold requires consistent redirection training.
