Whippet

The Whippet is a medium-sized sighthound known for its elegant, slender build and remarkable speed. Originally bred by Victorian-era working-class miners for rabbit coursing and rag racing, Whippets combine explosive athleticism with a calm, affectionate indoor demeanor. They're often described as the 'Goldilocks' of dogs - not too big, not too small, active when needed but wonderfully quiet at home.

The Honest Truth

Before you fall in love, know what you're getting into.

DealbreakerSeparation Anxiety (The Velcro Curse)

Whippets were bred to live in close quarters with owners, often sleeping in beds for warmth. They have very low tolerance for isolation - many cannot handle a standard 8-9 hour workday alone. Expect whining, howling, and destructive chewing of doorframes and bedding.

DealbreakerPrey Drive (The Sighthound Switch)

Movement triggers an explosive chase response that overrides all training. A plastic bag, squirrel, or even a running small dog can trigger instant 35mph pursuit. Recall is unreliable - a Whippet off-leash in an unfenced area may end up lost or hit by a car.

ChallengePhysical Fragility

Extremely thin skin with no protective undercoat or fat layer. Prone to skin tears from minor snags on bushes or rough play. Zero cold tolerance - they will suffer without coats in cold climates.

ChallengeSmall Animal Risk

Generally unsafe around rabbits, rodents, and birds. Cat coexistence is possible but requires careful management and early socialization - outdoor cats are seen as fair game.

Living Situation

Apartment Living
Excellent - quiet, clean, medium-sized. Perfect apartment dogs with daily sprint access
Work From Home
Excellent - will sleep under your desk for 4-6 hours, quiet during Zoom calls
Alone Time
Low - 4 hours maximum without a break/walker. Does best with canine companion or home-based owner
First-Time Owner
Good choice for beginners

With Other Pets

Dogs
Generally friendly
Cats
Possible with early socialization and confident cats - but outdoor cats trigger prey drive. Predatory drift can occur even with familiar cats if they bolt suddenly.
Small Mammals
Unsafe - rabbits, rodents, and hamsters are natural prey
Birds & Reptiles
Unsafe - fast, jerky movements trigger the strike reflex

Climate & Seasonal Care

Heat Tolerance 4/5
Cold Tolerance 1/5
Winter Needs
Needs coat/boots • Paw protection recommended
Summer Care
Limit exercise in heat
Seasonal Shedding
Low

Winter: MANDATORY wardrobe - light sweater for autumn, heavy parka for winter, snood for ears in wind, boots for salt/ice. Summer: Avoid midday sun, dark/black Whippets overheat quickly. White patches and noses susceptible to sunburn.

Breed Origins

Origin
Victorian England (Northern England mining communities), late 19th century
Original Purpose
Rabbit coursing and rag racing - developed as the 'poor man's racehorse' for working-class entertainment
Field/Working Lines
Racing/coursing Whippets - slightly more drive and speed-focused
Show/Conformation Lines
Show Whippets maintain functional athleticism - most can still course effectively. US lines tend to be more angulated; UK/European more moderate.

Living With a Whippet

Odor Level
Very Low
Coat Feel
Smooth, warm, skin-like texture. Not oily. Minimal dander. Cuddling a Whippet is like cuddling a 'warm bag of elbows' - bony but loving.
Surrender Risk: Low
  • Separation anxiety - owners underestimate velcro nature and dog destroys house when isolated
  • Life changes (divorce/moving) in combination with anxiety issues
  • Media-driven aesthetic purchases - viral 'long boi' videos create demand from unprepared owners

Exercise Menu

Physical

Mental
15 minutes
The Zoomie (Sprint Session)10-15 min
Access to securely fenced area for full-speed sprinting - the gold standard for Whippet happiness
Sniffari Walk30-45 min
Long-line exploration walk - they engage with the world visually and through scent
Lure Coursing/Flirt Pole10-15 min
Taps into prey drive in controlled way - excellent mental and physical outlet
Food Puzzles10-15 min
They are food motivated and will work for meals
They are sprinters, not marathon runners. Not ideal jogging partners for long distances on pavement due to joint structure and low body fat (overheating/paws). After their hour of activity, they will sleep the remaining 23 hours.

Life Stages

Puppy0-12 months

Easier than average puppy - cleaner and less destructive than gundogs or terriers. BUT they are fragile - a puppy jumping off a couch can break a leg. House training challenge: they hate rain/cold and may refuse to potty outside in bad weather. Covered potty areas are a lifesaver.

Adolescent12-24 months

Peak energy age: 1-3 years

Adult2-9 years

Prime years - energy stabilizes but remains active

Senior10+ years

Generally sharp cognitively until the end. MVD is common cause of death - presents as coughing or lethargy, manageable with medication for some time. Increased need for warmth and soft bedding in senior years.

Excellent car travelers - curl up and sleep. Must be crated or belted (loose Whippet is a projectile and flight risk if door opens). Good for 5-8 mile day hikes on soft terrain. Camping only in warm weather - they need sleeping bag/pad, cannot sleep on hard ground. Hotels love them - quiet, clean, odorless.

Small Animal Safe
Use caution

Escape via opportunity (open door) not effort (digging/climbing). They are jumpers - 6ft fences recommended. Electronic/invisible fences are USELESS - a Whippet in drive runs through the shock without noticing, then may be too afraid to come back. Never off-leash in unfenced areas.

Training Guide

Recommended Method
Positive reinforcement ONLY - harshness causes shutdown or fearfulness
Learning Speed
5-15 repetitions
Training Tips
  • Use high-value rewards (real meat/cheese) for recall training
  • Keep sessions short and varied - they bore quickly
  • Never expect off-leash reliability in open areas
  • Focus on impulse control rather than trying to eliminate prey drive
Common Challenges
  • Recall - hardest command, never fully trustworthy in unfenced areas with wildlife
  • Boredom - 5 reps is fun, 20 is boring and they will walk away
  • Independent thinking - they ask 'What's in it for me?'

Care Tips for Whippets

Tip #1

Provide 45-60 minutes of daily exercise including opportunities to sprint in a securely fenced area - they need explosive release followed by rest.

Tip #2

Invest in a warm wardrobe: sweaters for cool days, heavy coats for winter - Whippets have thin skin, no undercoat, and zero cold tolerance.

Tip #3

Keep nails trimmed weekly - fast-growing nails can cause injuries during sprinting. Use a Dremel or clipper consistently.

Tip #4

Never let off-leash in unfenced areas - their prey drive overrides recall, and they can reach 35mph in seconds.
