What is a dog influencer?
We have defined the term dog influencer as follows:
A dog that greatly influences the buying behavior of other dog owners via social media. Usually because the dog in question has either a very high reach (number of followers), or a very high follower engagement (fewer followers, but more engagement), and everything in between.
How to become dog influencer
Based on the video below, we share some tips on how your dog can become a dogfluencer on Instagram. Amber breaks down how she optimized her Instagram so that dog brands would want to work with her and her dog Olive.
Let's look at 7 tips on how you can become a dog influencer as well...
Tip #1: Start early
Puppies tend to get a lot more attention. Once people follow your puppy, they often want to follow your dog for life. So start your account as early as possible.
An additional advantage of starting in the puppy phase with your dog's channel is that you can still learn behavior and tricks relatively easily, like 'sit' and 'stay'. After all, dogs that listen well are easier to photograph.
Tip #2: Tell dog people about your dog's account
Ask dog-loving family, friends, co-workers, and maybe even people you exercise with to follow your dog's account. These early followers will tell you what they like about your dog. Learn from their comments, to further nurture you channel.
And don't be shy. Follow other accounts you like. Some of them will follow you back. Following other account will also give you inspiration.
Tip #3: Find out what makes your dog unique
What works well for your dog? This is unique for each dog. Some dogs have glossy lips, other dogs can run very fast.
People will respond to your posts, stories and roles. You get DMs. Pay attention to what people comment. This will give you clues about what makes your dog interesting to others.
Once you know what drives followers and engagement, focus on that kind of content and make it your own.
Tip #4: Post more often
There is no better way to get a chance on a viral post. Just start posting more. This will attract more and more followers.
Once you know what makes your dog unique to others, try to match a tone-of-voice that fits nicely. For example, this could be funny captions, or telling stories behind the photos.
Tip #6: Engage with your followers
Social media algorithms like it when people engage with content. This will lead to longer user sessions, which is what they want, because they can sell more ads. If you help the algorithm, in return the algorithm will help you.
You can encourage more interaction by asking a question or making a statement that you support, but much of the dog community doesn't. Always respond (in your own writing style) to make people feel connected.
Tip #7: Create high-quality photos and videos
Photo quality is important. Take pictures outside with natural daylight or inside right by the window. Focus the camera on what you want to highlight, and correlates with the caption.
To increase the chance of great photos, shoot a bunch of photos. After that, select and edit the ones that you find the best.
