FLUTD stands for “feline lower urinary tract disease” and describes ailments of the lower urinary tract in cats. Renal gravel, in the form of struvite crystals, is usually behind this problem.
Renal gravel and kidney stones (usually struvite) in cats lead to problems with passing urine. The typical symptoms for FLUTD include frequent urination of small amounts, usually accompanied by expressions of pain.
The DL-methionine in the FLUDT paste reduces the pH of the urine to ca. 6.0 – 6.5, increases the acidity of the urine and thus counteracts the formation of struvite crystals. This provides the security of having done something to counteract this unpleasant and painful ailment.
The formation of struvite stones can also be readily prevented with the right feeding. High-quality complete foods with a lot of meat and little magnesium (both wet and dry feeds) give rise to acid pH levels in urine, which counteracts the formation of struvite.
